To make

• Measure the windows you want to decorate, then cut your card to size.

• If you don’t feel confident in your drawing abilities, use the Halloween images provided or search the web for ideas. You can scale them up or down on a copier machine.

• On a piece of plain paper, roughly sketch where you want to place each image (this helps to ensure you won’t run out of space).

• Draw your images onto the card, then carefully cut out the shape with a craft knife. Remember that you are cutting an outline only. You can stick small detail pieces such as eyes in position on the window with soft tack once your card is in place.

• The cut-out piece that is left after you lift away your shape makes an additional silhouette to attach to a window or wall.

• Backlight your silhouettes by placing a light – such as a candle in a jam jar or your pumpkin lantern – on the window sill and turn out all the other lights in the room. Remember to make sure any candle or lantern is secure and don’t ever leave a lit one unattended.

Tips

We used black card but you can just as easily use orange. If the card is not too thick and your craft knife is sharp enough you may want to cut through two layers together – one black and one orange or white – to make the process even quicker.
